4 Winds favourites

These are our personal recommendations - places to eat, sights to see, services we've found helpful - which we hope you will use and enjoy.

Bute, the Kyles of Bute, Loch Fyne and Arran

An Lochan Tighnabruaich - one of our all time favourites for top quality, locally sourced, imaginatively prepared food and a warm and friendly welcome from the McKie family and their team. An Lochan has private serviced moorings and pontoon available; with a charge refundable against your meal. 55' 54.07N 05'14.25W

Mount Stuart House and Gardens, Isle of Bute - a fantastic visit if you're spending a day exploring Bute, Mount Stuart is a Victorian Gothic mansion set in 300 acres of gardens, 5 miles south of Rothesay. Restaurant, gift shop and garden centre.

Loch Riddon - A lovely, peaceful and secluded anchorage on a fine day, Loch Riddon is often passed by as you round the North end of Bute from the East to West Kyle. Take the time to sail up a little further and enjoy the tranquility.

The Oystercatcher, Otterferry - Right on the beach, on the shores of Loch Fyne, with its own moorings and floating pontoon available free for visitors' use. The location really couldn't be better and the relaxed, friendly welcome and varied, good value menu make this an ideal lunch or evening stop. New for 2009, the Oystercatcher also now offers beauty treatments, so you might just find yourselves staying longer than you intended!

Arran Distillery, Lochranza, Isle of Arran - we think this is one of the best distillery tours there is. The team at Arran have really worked to make the experience informative and fun. Great setting, regular tours, and a free tasting at the end! Gift shop and restaurant. Anchor or take a visitor moorning at Lochranza and walk down to the distillery.

Argyll Coast

The Pier House, Port Appin - The Pier House is a great stop, on the shores of Loch Linnhe about 10nm north of Oban. It's a beautiful setting and the Pier House's owners have made every effort to encourage and welcome passing sailors. Visitor moorings are available at £10/night, April - October, and additional facilities available by arrangement with the hotel include a sauna, showers and washing and drying machines. Great food too - a bar menu is available as well as an a la carte lunch and dinner menu, with an emphasis on seasonal Scottish produce. 56' 33.16N 05' 34.95W
